About this tool

Body mass index (BMI) is a quick screening number that relates weight to height. It is widely used because it is simple, free, and comparable across large groups of adults.

Habbeat’s BMI calculator uses the standard adult formulas: kg ÷ m² (metric) or 703 × lb ÷ in² (imperial). Results map to common adult ranges: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese.

BMI is not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat, muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored. Athletes, older adults, and people with certain medical conditions may fall outside “expected” categories while still being healthy — or the reverse.

How it works

  1. Add your weight and height under Your details. Switch between metric and imperial anytime; we convert for the math.
  2. We compute BMI and label the adult category using common public-health cut-offs (e.g. 18.5–24.9 as a typical “normal” range for many adults).
  3. Use the result as a starting conversation with a clinician or coach — not as a sole measure of fitness or health.

Practical tips

  • Measure height without shoes and weight at a consistent time of day for cleaner trend comparisons.
  • If you lift regularly, pair BMI with waist circumference, strength progress, or a coach’s assessment.
  • Pregnancy, eating disorders, and under-18s need specialised guidance — this tool is aimed at typical adults.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

Many public-health charts treat roughly 18.5–24.9 as a normal adult range, 25–29.9 as overweight, and 30+ as obese. Individual targets can differ — ask a clinician if you have questions about your category.

Why can BMI be misleading?

Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people can show a higher BMI without high body fat. BMI also ignores fat distribution (e.g. visceral fat), which matters for metabolic risk.
